DISABILITIES: Blind / Visual Impairments

The term visual disability includes conditions ranging from some low vision to legal blindness to the absence of any sight at all-total blindness. The support at Hunter College addresses and fulfills students' needs as they impact upon their academic careers.

Available Support
Some of the accommodations utilized by students with Visual Impairments include:

  • Alternative Test-taking Accommodations

  • Assistive Devices through Access and Technology Center:
    – Hand/stand magnifier
    – Photo copier enlargement
    – Large print
    – Color acetate sheets
    – Four track tape recorders and talking calculators
    – Braille embossers
    – Closed circuit television system (CCTV)
    – Image converter into tactile format (Picture In A Flash-PIAF)
    – Screen magnification software (Zoomtext)
    – Voice output to computers (JAWS, Kurzweil 1000 & 3000)
    – Dragon Naturally Speaking Professional
