Ask Advisor Alex
Dear Advisor Alex:
On my transcript I have 60 index credits, but only 48 total credits. What’s the difference?
Thanks,
Counting Cal
Dear Counting:
Good question. Total Credits is the number of credits you’ve earned, while Index Credits is the number of credits that are being applied toward your GPA. So, for example, if you fail a 3 credit class, you do not get the 3 credits added to your Total because you didn’t earn them, but they do count in your Index Credits because Fs are calculated into your GPA. On the other hand, if you took a 3 credit class as Credit/No Credit, and earned Credit (CR), those 3 credits would count toward your Total because you earned them, but not toward your Index credits because CR grades are not part of your GPA. Hope that helps!
Always,
Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
I am returning to Hunter this spring, but I haven’t taken any classes since 1991. What requirements do I need to follow- the ones that were in place when I left or the ones in place now?
Sincerely,
Ricochet Rachel
Dear Ricochet:
Welcome back! The key here is 10 years. Once you’ve been away from Hunter for at least 10 consecutive years, you must follow the current Hunter requirements, which are the General Education Requirements (GER). If you had declared a major before you left, and plan to continue in that major, you’ll have to check with the department to see what requirements they want you to fulfill.
Always,
Advisor Alex
