Ask Advisor Alex and Other Apt Advice for the Week of October 8, 2007

  • Get moving! Regular exercise will help keep you thinking clearly and feeling alert, especially as the fall winds start to blow and the days get short. Hunter has lots of exercise facilities with flexible hours so you can fit in some physical activity before, after or between classes. http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/athletics/recreation/rec/schedule.shtml
  • Talk to your instructors to get a realistic sense of how you are doing in your classes and what options you have for improving your grades. It seems early, but midterms and the Withdrawal deadline will be upon us in no time and then it may be too late to correct course!

Ask Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
I am a new transfer student this semester. When I registered, not all of my transfer courses had been evaluated, and just this week I realized I got transfer credit for a class I am taking right now! What should I do?

Thanks,
Upset Ursula

Dear Upset:
Uh oh! This happens sometimes for transfer students when registration and transfer evaluation times don’t line up well. You can’t get credit for a course twice unless it is a class that is specifically designated in the catalog as “repeatable” http://registrar.hunter.cuny.edu/subpages/collegecatalog.shtml. If it is not, when you apply for graduation the Registrar will see that you have credit for the same class twice, and will remove the credits and the grade for the repeated class. This could mean you will suddenly be short of the 120 credits you need to graduate!

First, talk to someone in Transfer Admissions to see if the course can be reevaluated, either by them or the department, or listed as an elective instead. If not, you may want to consider Withdrawing before you spend too much time completing a course you can’t get credit for. Talk to an advisor about all the options.

Always
Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
Dear Advisor Alex:
I am interested in starting a Basket Weaving club here at Hunter. What do I need to do and how do I get started?

Sincerely,
Plaiting Perry

Dear Plaiting:
Sounds interesting! It is Surprising that Hunter has gone this long without a Basket Weaving Club. Luckily, starting one is fairly simple. You will have to gather at least 10 people who are interested and meet to discuss your charter, mission, officers, budget and other details. The Student Organization Chartering Handbook has all of the information and forms you need to get started: http://studentservices.hunter.cuny.edu/sa/CharteringHandbook.pdf

You can also contact Student Activities for all the details: student.activities@hunter.cuny.edu

Happy weaving!

Always,
Advisor Alex
