Ask Advisor Alex
Dear Advisor Alex:
I called the Office of Advising Services to get an appointment with an advisor about my spring schedule, but they said they are not taking appointments right now and it’s all walk-in. What does that mean and when can I get an appointment?
Thanks,
Impatient Imogene
Dear Impatient:
The Office of Advising Services almost always has some advisors available to see “walk-in” students. Walk-in students are seen on a first-come-first-served basis, so depending on how many students are ahead of you, there may be a wait. Every semester, in the weeks just before and just after registration starts, the advising office stops scheduling appointments and starts seeing students on a walk-in basis only. This is because it is such a busy time, with many students wanting to speak to someone about registration, that as many advisors as possible need to be available to meet with students for as much time as possible. If you can wait until a couple weeks after registration starts, you will be able to get an appointment, but don’t wait too long because at the beginning of spring classes the Advising Office is walk-in only again!
Always,
Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
I have almost 60 credits and I have NO IDEA what to major in! How do I figure it out?? By the way- are you a real person?
Sincerely,
Majorly Lost
Dear Lost:
I am as real as you are, and if you’d like to pursue that thought further I would recommend a Philosophy major! Choosing a major can be serious business and there are a lot of factors to be considered. The key is to gather as much information as possible about yourself and about the majors, and then find out where they match up. Think about what you like, what you’re good at, what career you’re interested in, etc. Talk about the majors themselves with advisors, faculty, and people in careers you’re interested in. The Center for Student Achievement has a great workshop on choosing a major that will help you consider all of these factors: http://studentservices.hunter.cuny.edu/csa/csa_studyskillsworkshopschedule.htm
The Career Development Center also has great resources for major and career choices: http://studentservices.hunter.cuny.edu/cds/cds_services_careercounseling.htm
Always,
Advisor Alex
