Ask Advisor Alex and Other Apt Advice for the Week of January 21-25, 2008

  • 1/24 is the last day to drop a class and receive a 100% tuition refund.
  • Classes begin and Late Registration opens 1/25-1/29. If you have not yet registered for classes at all, there is a $25 fee for registering at this time. If you have registered and make changes to your schedule, there is an $18 fee for each change you make.

Ask Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
I am a new transfer student and my credits were not done being evaluated before registration closed, so I will have to register during Late Registration. Am I going to be able to get any classes?

Sincerely,
Neophyte Neil

Dear Neophyte:
The short answer is yes, you will be able to get classes. There are quite a few courses with open seats. The difficulty may come in getting exactly the classes you want. As much as you can, try to be flexible for this semester and maybe just take some classes for the GER or electives. For summer and fall registration you will be able to register much earlier and, then you can be more selective about your courses. For classes that you absolutely must have, many departments allow overtallying, which is getting permission to register for a class that is full. Talk to the department to find out if they allow it and what their procedure is.

Always,
Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
How many electives do I need to graduate?

Thanks,
Needs-Assessing Ned

Dear Needs-Assessing:
The answer is that which addresses all great questions: “It Depends." Each student needs to complete 120 credits, and this includes a Major, a Minor and the General Education Requirements (GER). Minors are usually 12 credits, but some are larger. Majors vary in size from 24 to 60 credits, and the number of credits you need for the GER varies depending on credits you may have transferred in, and exemptions you may have gotten, and how efficient you are in selecting classes that meet more than one requirement. So you need enough electives to get you to 120 after you have all of your major, minor and GER credits. Major Credits + Minor Credits + GER Credits + Electives =120. So, an elective class is any class that is not applying toward your major, minor or GER, but is helping you get to 120 credits, and how many you need depends on those other factors. Hope that helps!

Always,
Advisor Alex
