Ask Advisor Alex and Other Apt Advice for the Week of December 3, 2007

  • Registration for Spring 2008 is open- DON’T WAIT! Get into classes now so you have the greatest number of choices, and then you can make changes later if you need to.
  • Remember that if you plan to use a Credit/No Credit you must submit the form to your instructor before the final! Forms are available in the OASIS and here: http://registrar.hunter.cuny.edu/subpages/forms.shtml.
Keep the other half of the form for your records.

Ask Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
My foreign language requirement is fulfilled because I took 4 years of French in high school so I applied for a foreign language exemption in Student Services. I am interested in studying Arabic now. Can I do that even though my foreign language requirement is done?

Thanks,
Polyglot Polly

Dear Polyglot:
Oui! Si! Cain! Ja! Sim! Yes! The GER is the minimum you are required to complete for each academic area, but you are welcome, and encouraged, to continue to study any areas you are interested in. One thing to keep in mind about foreign languages is that, at Hunter, you cannot receive credit for a 101 class unless you pass the 102 class, so when you start a new language you are committing to completing at least two semesters. If you complete 101 and not 102, you will lose the credits for 101 when you apply for graduation! Talk to the specific language department you are interested in to see what level is appropriate for you. Bonne chance!

Always,
Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
I was just discharged from the army and am starting as a transfer student at Hunter in the spring. How do I get my GI Bill benefits?

Sincerely,
GI Jin Lee

Dear GI:
Welcome home! To get started, complete the on-line education benefits application at the VA website: http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp
You will then receive information from the VA detailing what benefits you are entitled to. In the meantime, bring a copy of your discharge papers (DD-214) to the Veterans’ Student Services Coordinator/Certifying Official in 1119E to get your file started. Each semester, after you have registered for all your classes, you will contact the Hunter Certifying Official, who will then certify you with the VA so you may receive benefits for that semester. Each month you attend classes, you will verify your continued enrollment at Hunter with the VA by phone or online using WAVE: https://www.gibill.va.gov/wave/

The Veterans’ Student Services Coordinator can also assist with academic advising and program planning, arranges veterans’ services and events, and provides information on opportunities for veterans. More information about veterans’ Student Services at Hunter and other veteran benefits and resources can be found on the Veterans’ website: http://studentservices.hunter.cuny.edu/veterans.htm

Always,
Advisor Alex
