Ask Advisor Alex and Other Apt Advice for the Week of January 28, 2008
- Course adding and dropping will be going on throughout the first week of classes, so keep an eye out for newly open spots in classes you want but didn’t get, and don’t forget to use the “Replace” button instead of “Drop” to avoid mistakes and extra fees.
- The Office of Student Services will be open 9:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday-Thursday and 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Friday, with all advisors available on a walk-in basis to try to accommodate as many students as possible during this busy time. If you have an advisement issue that is not urgent, advisors will be taking appointments starting the week of February 5.

Ask Advisor Alex
Dear Advisor Alex:
I missed the due date for my tuition bill and all of my courses got dropped! I had the perfect schedule with all the classes I needed, but now everything is full and I can’t register until the first day of classes. On top of that, I have to be full time to keep my financial aid. Please help!
Sincerely,
Classless Clarissa
Dear Classless:
This is a sad circumstance, but not so bad as you might imagine. Yes, many classes are now full and it will be harder to find classes that you want. But, if you can be just a little bit flexible, there are a large number of classes still open. Look to see what classes have available seats in your major or minor department. Check your General Education Requirements and see what open courses may fulfill some of those. Explore some electives! You probably will not recreate your “perfect schedule”, but you should be able to find enough classes to keep your financial aid, and maybe even discover some really interesting subjects you may not have considered. Stepping outside of your comfort zone a little and experimenting with a class in an area you haven’t studied before can be a great way to expand your knowledge, compliment what you’ve been studying and maybe even expose you to a fascinating new topic! Of course, for classes you must have this semester, some departments will consider overtally requests to get into full classes, and you should check with those departments to find out exactly what their procedure is. Contact an advisor in Student Services to discuss all your options.
Always,
Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
I am planning to graduate this spring. I have all of my major and minor requirements fulfilled and I will have 122 credits after this semester. I thought I had all of my General Education Requirements taken care of, but when I tried to fill out my Degree Audit Application Form I got confused. Can courses be used toward my major and the GER? Can I use a course for the Pluralism and Diversity requirement and in the Core? I am pretty sure I took a class to fulfill the Women and/or Issues of Gender requirement, but now I can’t remember which one it was. How do I find all this out?
Yours Truly,
Graduating Glenn
Dear Graduating:
First of all, congratulations! You are very near the end of this journey and the beginning of the next, and it is an exciting time. In answer to your questions: Some of the courses for your major may be used to meet some of the GER, but there are restrictions, and yes, you may use a course for both the Pluralism and Diversity requirements and the Core. To double check the GER rules and what classes meet Pluralism and Diversity requirements, see pages 24-52 of the Hunter catalog (also online: http://registrar.hunter.cuny.edu/subpages/collegecatalog.shtml), or consult with an advisor in Student Services before submitting your Degree Audit Application. Enjoy your final semester at Hunter!
Always,
Advisor Alex
