Ask Advisor Alex and Other Apt Advice for the Week of January 7-11, 2008

  • Registration will reopen for new transfer students only on January 8, and then will be open to all students from January 9-16.
  • If you registered for spring classes in December, but had them cancelled because you did not pay your bill on time, you will not be able to reregister for classes until January 11.

If you add classes during this upcoming registration period, there will not be time to receive your bill by mail so you must pick it up in the OASIS and pay by January 17

Ask Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
In my first semester at Hunter I took MUSTH101, Basic Musicianship. My friend took MUSHL101 Introduction to Music, and told me that her class fulfills the General Education Requirement for Visual and Performing Arts (GER2D) but mine does not and I need another art class. Is that true??

Thank You,
Envious Emmy

Dear Envious:
I’m afraid your friend is correct. MUSHL101 fulfills GER2D, but MUSTH101 does not. It is slightly confusing because the course numbers are so similar. In general, courses that are practical in nature, such as the Basic Musicianship class, do not fulfill the GER. Always check the catalog to be sure classes you are taking meet the requirement you think they do: http://registrar.hunter.cuny.edu/subpages/collegecatalog.shtml

Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
I started Hunter with 6 AP credits in BIOL100 and BIOL102, but an advisor told me that I need 1 more science credit for the General Education Natural Science Requirement (GE2E), and that I can’t use them for the Pluralism and Diversity Requirement, even though the catalog says having both these classes fulfill P&D C or D. Why?

From,
Science Stanley

Dear Science:
The GER Natural Science requirement is 7 credits, so you do need 1 more science class to have enough credits. As for the Pluralism and Diversity requirement, you may only use BIOL100 and 102 to fulfill P&D C or D if you took those 2 classes here at Hunter. If you got credit for them from an AP exam you may not use them for P&D at all, and if you took them at another college you must go to the Biology Department to ask for permission to use them for P&D. The catalog notes this on page 29, but it is easy to miss. Hope that helps!

Always,
Advisor Alex
