Ask Advisor Alex and Other Apt Advice for the Week of March 10, 2008
- HEADS UP! Most of the Arts and Sciences Summer Session I courses are 6 weeks long (6/2-7/10) but some are 8 weeks long (6/2-7/24)! Check the notes for each Summer Session class you register for to be certain of the end date. All Summer Session II classes are 4 weeks long (7/21-8/21).
- Coming into the 7th week of classes, you should be getting a sense of how you are doing. Get help now in any classes you are struggling with before it’s too late! Talk to your instructor or an advisor for information about where to get help.
Ask Advisor Alex
Dear Advisor Alex:
At the end of this semester, I will have all of my degree requirements completed except for two classes, which I plan to take in the Summer. Is there a way I can participate in the Spring graduation, even though I am finishing my classes in the Summer? Should I submit a Degree Audit Application?
Thanks,
Finishing Fernando
Dear Finishing:
You are in the home stretch! It often happens that students need the Summer Session to finish up their courses for graduation, but really want to walk in the Spring commencement ceremony. The answer to your first question is, yes. If you have 6 credits or less to complete in the Summer Session, you can participate in the Spring commencement.
The answer to your second question is no. You will be participating in the ceremony, but not actually graduating until you finish your Summer courses, so you should not submit a Degree Audit Application. For now, you just need to complete a Commencement Card, indicating that you plan to participate in the Spring ceremony, and submit it to the OASIS.
Once you submit that form and are approved to participate, you will start to receive information about the ceremony, tickets, cap and gown, yearbooks and all that fun stuff. More information about commencement is here:
http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/news/commencement/index.shtml
You will submit your Degree Audit Application at the beginning of June, when you are registered for the final classes that you need, and then your degree will be processed at the end of the Summer Session. Your graduation will be a great day for you and those who have supported you!
Always,
Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
I have completed all of my General Education Requirements, and I will be finished with my major and minor, and have 108 credits by the end of next fall. I plan to complete my final 12 credits in the Spring semester, and because I have all of my requirements fulfilled, I thought I would look into an internship as a way to earn some of those credits. How do I find out about what internships are available and how to get credit?
From,
Eager Ernie
Dear Eager:
Good for you on finishing up all of your requirements so soon! It is nice to have some flexibility in your final semesters, and an internship can be a great way to gain experience while completing your degree. Hunter has a large variety of internship opportunities in corporations, government agencies and non-profit organizations, which can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis. Contact Career Development Services
in 805 East (212-772-4850) or check out the Internships web page for more information: http://studentservices.hunter.cuny.edu/cds/cds_services_internships.htm
The internship coordinator will work with you to decide which internship is best for you, and how to go about applying and earning credit toward your degree. Good luck!
Always,
Advisor Alex
