Advisor Alex’s Apt Advice for the Week of August 27, 2007:
- For the first 2 weeks of classes, advisors in 1119 East are seeing students only on a Walk-in basis to accommodate as many people as possible. If you have questions or concerns that don’t need immediate attention, consider waiting until later in the semester when appointments are available and walk-in wait times are down.
- Balance yourself! Get into the habit now of budgeting time to study, relax, exercise, and socialize around your work and school schedule. This will make it easier to get into a rhythm and stay balanced when crunch time comes.
Ask Advisor Alex and Other Apt Advice for the Week of August 27, 2007*
Dear Advisor Alex
I am a new freshman student and I am registered for mostly social science and humanities courses, but my mother says I should go pre-med. Can I replace some of my classes with Chemistry and Pre-calculus?
Sincerely,
Fresh Freddie
Dear Fresh:
There are so many reasons not to do that! First, all of the Chemistry and Pre-calculus classes are completely full, so you will not be able to get into them this semester. More importantly, a pre-med curriculum is a big commitment and not a decision that should be made hastily. All of the classes you currently have are fulfilling requirements that every student at Hunter needs, including pre-med students. Considering how close we are to the beginning of classes, I would recommend you stick with your current schedule, find out more about the pre-med program this semester, and then take up the math and science in spring if you choose to go that route. Welcome to Hunter and good luck in your first semester!
Always,
Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
I got permission to overtally into a full Urban Studies class. I got a note from the professor saying it’s OK and I took it to the department, but the class isn’t showing up on my schedule. Do I need to do something else?
Thanks,
Adding Addy
Dear Adding:
Just one more very important step- REGISTER FOR THE CLASS! Getting an overtally simply means that the department has given you permission to register for a class that is full, but it does not mean you are automatically registered for the class. Once you get permission, you must go back into eSIMS and add the class to your schedule. If adding this class alters your current billing status, you must then pay any additional tuition or fees to the Bursar office. Also, keep in mind that each department handles overtallies differently, and some don’t do it at all, so in the future be sure to check with each department individually to find out what their policy is.
Always,
Advisor Alex
