Ask Advisor Alex and Other Apt Advice for the Week of September 24, 2007

  • Degree Audit Applications will be considered “late” after October 1, and there is no guarantee thy will be processed in time for graduation. So if you want to be sure you are graduating this semester, get your paperwork into the OASIS by October 1!
  • Thinking about paying for your next year at Hunter? Check out the Grants Guide and start preparing to apply for available grants and scholarships. Many have early spring deadlines and require letters of recommendation or essays so getting started now will give you time to have the best possible application: http://studentservices.hunter.cuny.edu/grants.htm Also, when spring comes complete a new FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and Hunter Scholarship Application to make sure you are eligible for all possible funding: https://saturn.hunter.cuny.edu:4443/pls/stars/sch_application_pkg.app_launch1

Ask Advisor Alex

Dear Advisor Alex:
I am planning to graduate after this semester. I’m pretty sure I have everything completed, but I’m not sure what I need to do to actually graduate. Where do I start?

Thanks,
Finishing Frida

Dear Finishing:
Congratulations- that is very exciting! Applying for graduation is fairly simple. First, you should get a Degree Audit Application Form, either from the OASIS or here: http://registrar.hunter.cuny.edu/forms/Degreeaudt/udergrad.htm. If you started at Hunter after 2001 you need the GER version, if you started before 2001, you probably need the DR version, but check with an advisor to be certain.

Complete the first page with classes for your General Education or Distribution Requirements. An advisor in 1119E can help you figure out what goes where if you get confused. The second page is completed with your major and minor courses, and must be signed and stamped by an advisor in your major department. If you are a double major, you will need 2 copies of the second page, signed and stamped by each department you are majoring in. Once you have all that, you turn it into the OASIS by October 1 and they will check to make sure everything is complete and contact you if they require additional information.

Then, keep an eye on the Commencement website for information on the ceremony date and time, getting tickets, cap and gown, yearbooks and more: http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/news/commencement/

Dear Advisor Alex:
I transferred from another college this semester, and my “Villains in Literature” course came into Hunter as ENGL250. I am interested in taking ENGL250.74, Arthurian Literature, in the spring, but am worried that because it is also ENGL250, it will be considered the same class as the one I transferred, and I won’t be able to get credit for it. They are different classes but both are coded ENGL250- will it be OK?

Sincerely,
Lit Lover Lisa

Dear Lit Lover:
This is a great question and very astute of you to catch it! ENGL250 is a topics course, and the subject that it covers may vary from semester to semester. Different topics are identified by the digits after the decimal. For example, Survey of African American Literature is ENGL250.88, Heroines is ENGL250.67, and Poetic Techniques is ENGL250.75. Because the topics vary, this is a class you are allowed to repeat, as long as you do not repeat the same topic. Your Villains in Literature class was one Hunter did not have a specific decimal code for, so it came in as simply ENGL250, but you may take additional ENGL250 courses as long as the topics keep changing. Enjoy your Arthurian Literature!

Always,
Advisor Alex
