GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT CHECKLIST

CORE REQUIREMENTS (STAGES 1, 2, 3)

A course may not be used more than once within the Core Requirements or within the Pluralism and Diversity Requirements.

A course may be used for a Core Requirement and a Pluralism and Diversity and a major or minor requirement. Credit will be given only once to a course used for multiple requirements.

WRITING INTENSIVE (W) DESIGNATION CANNOT BE GRANTED TO A COURSE TRANSFERRED FROM ANOTHER COLLEGE.


STAGE 1 - ACADEMIC FOUNDATIONS
GROUP A - English Composition (3 credits)
English composition
GROUP B - Quantitative Reasoning (3 credits)
(Students who place out of MATH 125 are exempt from this requirement) Click on the links for Placement Test results and charts for the CMAT test (taken prior to 2004) or the COMPASS Test to help you choose a course.
GROUP C - U.S. History (3 credits) Transfer courses may not be used to fulfill "W" requirement.
 
STAGE 2 - BROAD EXPOSURE
All courses in Stage 2 must be taken from different departments except Stage 2 Group E (Natural Science). See complete GER Regulations for exceptions that may apply to you. Transfer courses may not be used to fulfill "W" requirement.
GROUP A - Survey of Literature Written in English (3 credits)

GROUP C - Humanities: Culture and Ideas (3 credits)
GROUP D - Visual and Performing Arts (3 credits)

STAGE 3 - FOCUSED EXPOSURE - No courses from or cross-listed with the major department may be used towards Stage 3. (Example: an Film major cannot use Media courses because they are in the same department.)
MATH 105 can be used by Education majors for Stage 3B. Transfer courses may be used with deparmental approval.
GROUP A - Humanities or Visual and Performing Arts (3 credits)

Writing Requirement
Students entering Hunter College as of Fall 2001 must take at least one "W" (Writing Intensive) course.

Transfer students without an AA or AS degree from a CUNY college must take 1 course if entering with 60-90 credits. Transfer students without an AA or AS degree from a CUNY college must take 2 courses if entering with 31-59 credits Students entering as Freshmen are required to take 3 courses. Transfer students without an AA or AS degree from a CUNY college must take 3 courses if entering with 30 credits or less.

Foreign Language Requirement
Language (0 - 12 credits) Select the highest level taken. If lower than 202, fill in blanks with courses needed to reach that level. (Fourth semester college language course (202 or higher) must be completed or exempted to complete requirement.) Exemption is by proof of 4 years H.S. language to Student Services or by proficiency to appropriate Language Department.
The first semester of a four course sequence (e.g. 101) will not be credited towards graduation without successful completion of the second semester course (102).
NOTE: Accounting majors must refer to the college catalogue for their requirement. Health Science and Nursing majors are exempt from the language requirement.
