PLACEMENT TESTS
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

To ensure that you enroll in the appropriate level courses at Hunter College, you may be required to take one or more placement tests. Some will be arranged through the Testing Center, 150 North Building, which coordinates several placement tests for mathematics, writing, and reading, as well as the CUNY Proficiency Examination (CPE). Other placement tests will permit you to register for the proper level of foreign language study, or will make it possible for you to apply for an exemption from the Foreign Language Requirement of the General Education Requirement (GER) or the Distribution Requirement (DR).

For more information, visit the Testing Center or the appropriate foreign language department on-line.

CUNY Proficiency Examination (CPE)
The CUNY Proficiency Examination (CPE) tests a student's ability to understand and think critically about ideas and information and to write clearly, logically, and correctly at a level associated with success in upper-division courses. The CPE is a three-hour examination that consists of two tasks:

  • analytical reading and writing (2 hours)
  • analyzing and integrating material from graphs and text (1 hour)

All Hunter students are required to take the CPE in the first semester after they earn 45 credits. Transfer students who enter the college with 45 or more credits are required to take the CPE during their first semester at Hunter College.

For more information about the CPE, visit the Reading and Writing Center, 416 Thomas Hunter Hall, on-line, or in person. The Center offers a series of CPE workshops prior to each CPE test date.

To register for the CPE, visit the Testing Center, 150 North Building, on-line or in person.
