The Office of Student Activities & Leadership Development*
The Office of Student Activities & Leadership Development will continue to host “Student Organizations Election Week” until Friday, May 9th and strongly encourages as many students as well as student organizations to participate. This program is an effort to increase student participation in Hunter College’s student organizations and media, and to help elected officers of the organizations with the chartering and budgeting process. All undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to run for an executive position and/or participate in this event.

During these two weeks student organizations are encouraged to host their elections for the 2008-2009 academic year. If you are thinking about running for an executive board position of a student organization or if you are considering starting a new student organization, this is the perfect time to begin that process. While we realize it may be tradition for student organizations to host elections at the beginning of the fall semester, a few major benefits to hosting elections in the spring should be considered. Spring elections will allow for: a smoother transition from the outgoing executive board to the newly elected executive board; a more efficient chartering process; an opportunity for student officer’s to attend a two-day/weekend training, focusing on running an organization effectively and personal leadership development; program planning over the summer months; possible earlier submission and approval of club budgets and; increased participation from the student body.

Student Leadership Colloquium: “Student Leaders as Proactive Change Agents” – 5/7*

This is the fourth and final presentation this semester. Students MUST ATTEND ALL FOUR presentations in order to receive the Dean of Students Certificate of Attendance, which will be given out immediately following this presentation.

In this election year, the power of student leadership that infuses voices from the frontlines in public policy dialogues can create the positive changes we all envision in our communities. This presentation will illustrate the work of Hunter’s amazing student leaders, and engage the student audience in interactive exercises so they can learn the key elements of building and sustaining relationships with their representatives at the city, state and federal levels.

Presenter:Ms. Dillonna C. Lewis, holds a Master’s in Education & Counseling Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University. As Hunter College’s Welfare Rights Initiative (WRI) Co-Director, she shares responsibility for overall governance and leadership. The Leadership Program has trained over 200 students to serve as leaders in welfare public policy discourse, and as agents of change in their communities.
