Consider this guide your first step through the scholarship maze. The next steps will require hard work. You will need time, energy and perseverance as you explore financial awards. The information on scholarship availability changes frequently. Organizations may change their funding availability, eligibility requirements, contact information, and deadlines. As the scholarship seeker, you must take an active part in researching awards.

You will want to explore the following in your search:

• The Internet- Among other sources, students may access www.finaid.org, www.brokescholar.com, http://www.college-scholarships.com, and for online scholarship resources. Some allow you to enter your individual profile; they will do a search of hundreds of thousands of organizations from their database.
  
• Department advisors - Speak with them; they may be knowledgeable about scholarships in your field or can nominate you for an award.
  
• Affiliations - Many small foundations and associations offer assistance to their members or qualifying individuals.
  
• The Foundation Center – Offers information and free training sessions on how to find scholarships to help support your education. Sign up on the internet, www.fdncenter.org.
  
• The Hunter College Library - The fourth floor of the Hunter College Wexler Library has an excellent collection of reference books on scholarships.
  
• Bulletin boards - Check these regularly at the Office of Student Services, Room 1119 E and outside the office of your major department for current scholarship information.
  
• Paid internships -Investigate these opportunities in the Career Development Office, at Hunter East 805.
  
• Graduate schools - Remember, that if you are planning graduate study, your primary source of financial aid will most likely be the graduate school you will be attending. Contact the school early and inquire about the availability of financial assistance.
