FACULTY GUIDE
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Faculty members may observe students exhibiting overwhelming emotions (such as depression, anxiety, outbursts), social withdrawal, inability to focus on learning, missing classes or assignments, or disruptive and/or inappropriate behavior in class over an extended period of time.
Having trust and rapport with the students, you could be the first point of contact, as students may approach you to complain about the inability to concentrate, general unhappiness or marked depression/anxiety, irrational fears, overwhelming obligations etc. These are some of the signs and symptoms of psychological distress in students. They might warrant counseling at Personal Counseling Services at Hunter College or at other mental health services outside the Hunter campus. Working closely with Personal Counseling Services at this point may help prevent a student from academic failure and/or further mental health challenges.
Please refer students to Personal Counseling Services if:
- you have questions or concerns about a student’s emotional state and/or behavior.
- the problem of the student or requests made by them are beyond your role and they are in need of professional help.

How to Refer a Student:
- Suggest to the student to call (212) 772-4931 or visit Personal Counseling Services, located in 1123 East Building.
- Offer to help the student make the initial appointment, or let the student call from your office.
- Once the referral is made, communication between the student and the counselor is often confidential, but you will be informed if the student attends the initial appointment, if requested.
- Consider checking a week later with the student to see if he or she has followed through with the appointment.
- Communicate your continued concern and availability to the student.
- In case of an emergency (e.g. suicidal behavior, outbursts), contact Sudi Shayesteh, Interim Director of Counseling, at (212) 650-3581 or (212) 772-4931 during regular office hours. After office hours, please contact Public Safety at (212) 772-4444.
