WELCOME: Your Pre-Health File
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Housed in the office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences—Room 812 East, the assistant to the Director (of the Prehealth Professions Programs) will be the person you most frequently encounter during your years at Hunter. She maintains student files, helps you with inquiries regarding our procedures and those of the general college as well as serving as your liaison to the advisor and other Hunter administrators. She, along with the Director, will provide assistance to all Hunter students planning to apply to health professions schools. We maintain a file for each of you, and the contents of this file are completely confidential—no one else in the Dean’s office has access or permission to handle your information! Your prehealth file is crucial; it becomes the source of information for your Committee letter that is sent to professional schools when you are ready to apply. In order to ensure that you have the very best possible letter sent on your behalf much information is needed. Below is a list of everything we REQUIRE in order to provide you with a Committee letter.
- Each student must provide the Premedical Office with evaluation forms from instructors of all Premedical courses in which you have received a grade of B- or better (biology, chemistry, physics and math). You may also choose to give additional evaluations to instructors outside the fields of science and math. These evaluation forms may be obtained in the Prehealth Office at the end of each semester or you can give the above link to instructors to fill out the forms online. Either way, the evaluations should be given to your instructors during the last week of classes. The instructors return these forms to the Prehealth Office. It is YOUR responsibility to periodically check with our office to confirm receipt of these evaluations from your instructors.
Why are these evaluations necessary? And why are they needed from every one of your science instructors?
Almost every professional school requires a letter of evaluation from a Prehealth Committee. But this letter consists of the impressions you have made on your instructors! Therefore it is imperative that you get as many evaluations as possible so that your Committee letter can accurately reflect your academic performance here at Hunter. In addition, students who have transferred to Hunter from other institutions may ask that evaluations you have received from other schools be included in your file. Instructors from outside of Hunter must send comments on their letterhead! Letters of recommendation from your employers, volunteer programs, and research are also required and must also be on letterhead.
- We would like an updated résumé at least once a year. This will help us keep track of your extracurricular activities, jobs, scholarships and other noteworthy accomplishments that you may forget over the course of several years.
- We need transcripts for all institutions other than Hunter College. This will help you when you are ready to start the application process and will give us key information about your previous college experiences.
- The Supplementary Information Sheets will assist your assigned Committee member in the interview process and in the composition of your Committee letter. This information should be completed by March 1st for a Spring Committee letter and by July 1st for a Fall letter.
- We will need a Dean of student report to be filled out by Student Services East 1119. This form will stipulate that you had no disciplinary actions against you while at Hunter. Students with degrees from other institutions will need to forward this form to your previous college and have both submitted for your file.
- We also require a copy of your test scores. Your Committee letter evaluation is NOT based on these scores. However, by providing us with your scores we can better help you match them to the schools where you will be most competitive. You can either provide us with a copy or have your scores sent to us directly when you sit for the exam.
- Finally, we need a copy of your completed application to the health professions service you are applying through (AMCAS and/or AACOMAS for medical school, VMCAS for vet school, AADSAS for dental school, etc). This copy will give us statistical information about majors, GPA, and activities that Hunter premed students generally select. If you are receiving a Fall Committee letter, this application will be very helpful to the faculty member writing on your behalf. Students receiving Spring letters will not have an opportunity to complete the application before your letter is written but it is STILL required.
