THE SUCCESSFUL SCIENCE STUDENT: To Do List
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Notes for Hunter Pre-Health Professions Student
- See the advisor (Room 812 East) at least once a semester and join the Premed Listserv.
- You should have at minimum 6 lecture and 6 lab evaluations in your file from science faculty. These should be collected at the end of every semester. And you must collect letters of recommendation from employers, volunteer positions or research work done and have these entered into your file at least once a year.
- You should check the listserv and the bulletin boards outside of 812 for information on summer programs, volunteer opportunities, and other material that may be useful to you on a regular basis.
- You should become involved in your premed clubs, maps1x@hunter.cuny.edu, of which there are four: the premed club, the MAPS club (affiliated with Cornell medical school), AMSA, and the Postbaccalaureate Group.
- If you are planning to have a Committee letter written on your behalf you must have a completed file by March 1st for a spring letter and July 1st for a fall letter.
- Every semester you should look at your transcript (GPA Calculator), check your science GPA and look for any discrepancies. Are there INC or ABS grades that should be cleared before you send your transcripts out to summer programs, professional schools, scholarships?
- Transcripts take anywhere from 2 – 4 weeks to get out of the Registrar’s office and this may take longer if you have to order transcripts from other institutions you’ve attended so make sure you have them sent well ahead of any deadlines.
- Have you done any volunteer work in a medical setting? Do you have a letter stating what you did there? Do you have at least 150 hours? Make sure this information is in your file and update it at least once a year.
Speakers that come to Hunter to talk about their schools will give you specific information about their institution and the type of student they want. Make sure you have Wednesdays free during Dean’s hours so you participate in these activities. |
