Probation/Dismissal/Readmission on Probation

What is Probation?

If your GPA falls below retention level (see below) then you are automatically placed on probation. Probation is the one or two terms that you are given to raise your GPA to retention level. If you do not raise it in that time you are automatically dismissed from the college.

If you even think this might happen to you, you should speak to a counselor as soon as possible within the term prior to probation or dismissal.

During the time that you are on probation, you MAY NOT use the Credit/No Credit method of grading. You may use Incompletes and you may withdraw, but you should see a counselor before you do this.

Retention levels are:

0 - 12 credits minimum 1.50 GPA = D average
13 - 24 credits minimum 1.75 GPA = D average
25 cr and aboveminimum 2.00 GPA= C average

If you would like to know the grades you need to get to a 2.0, go to How to calculate your GPA.

Dismissal

If a student is not at retention level (see above) at the end of the Spring term, s/he is sent a letter of dismissal from The Dean of Students Office. The dismissal takes effect beginning with the fall term following dismissal. Students may take classes in summer session at Hunter to raise their GPA. ONLY GRADES EARNED AT HUNTER WILL COUNT TOWARDS THE HUNTER GPA.

Dismissal Appeals

All students are allowed to appeal academic dismissal. Appeals of academic dismissal must be in writing to the Hunter College Senate Committee on Student Standing. Appeals must be submitted by the deadlines set by the committee which are included in the letter of dismissal.

If you believe there is an error in your transcript (i.e. unchanged grade) you MUST file an appeal for your transcript to be checked for this error.

You may appeal your dismissal on the basis of special circumstances or any other reason that has prevented you from doing well ac ademically. You may appeal your dismissal by filing a Dismissal Appeal Form in the Reception Office of Student Services - Room 1119 East. You must file your appeal before the Student Standing Committee holds it meetings. The schedule will be posted in room 1119HE. Your appeal will be read and your record checked by the Committee.Your appeal may be accepted or denied.

If your appeal is accepted then you will remain at Hunter either on probation or not on probation (if your GPA has risen to 2.0). If your appeal is denied you will not be allowed to return to Hunter in the Fall semester. You will not be able to attend any other CUNY college during the Fall semester following your dismissal.

Readmission on Probation

If your appeal is denied, you may apply for readmission for the Spring term following your dismissal. You may apply in the Fall for the Spring semester and the Spring semester for the Summer/Fall. Your records will be checked and it will be determined whether or not you will be eligible to be readmitted. If you are eligible, you will be sent a Readmission letter from the Admissions Office.
