Message to Parents

Hello Parents,

Here at Hunter College we realize that sending your student to college is a time of remarkable transition for your family. While here with us, most students go through an adjustment period of ups and downs. There are many resources here on campus available for your student to manage this transition successfully.

At the Office of Residence Life our preference is to deal directly with the student. This enables us to establish a relationship with your son or daughter and helps us tremendously in getting to the root of the issues more efficiently. Needless to say, we welcome parent input and questions at any time, while also encouraging parents to support the involvement of the student in extracurricular activities. Aside from that, we would highly recommend consistent communication with your student as we are obligated by The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to protect the privacy and honor the students’ rights. Ultimately, our goal is to provide parents with the resources, which they can pass on to their student in hopes of constructing a healthy flow of communication.

It is of vital importance that students have as much support and encouragement from home as possible, while at the same time, being allowed to mature through their own experiences. We hope that you build a strong rapport with your student and that you can serve as a sounding board, but let them handle their own problems as much as possible. Keep in mind that your student's success is dependent upon his or her own ability to function independently.

We at Hunter College wish you a happy transition and please let us know how we can best serve you.
